Canavero is a self-confessed fan of comic books, during the interview he told the reporter how Marvel comics served as a refuge during his traumatic childhood at Turin, Italy, during the industrial period. At first we thought of using references from Doctor Strange comics, one of the most beloved characters by Canavero, but his story and project are much more darker and full of suspense. So we turn to Chiaroscuro technique on German Expressionism films and Frank Miller's composition (specially on Sin City series). I'm very proud of the final result!
This infographic was particularly trick! We did not have any images of the procedure, only some scientific illustrations of certain steps, and a long and intense scientific text (that still gives me goosebumps). The aesthetics of illustration helped to lighter the procedure and make them less scary. I'm pretty sure we were the first magazine to illustrate and publish the surgery!
